5 Day Devotional
Week of September 14 - Haggai 2
Devotional - Day 1
The Israelites faced a challenging decision after 70 years in Babylonian captivity. When given the opportunity to return home, only a small fraction chose to leave their comfortable lives in Babylon. Most had adapted so well to foreign soil that they preferred to stay rather than face the difficulties of rebuilding their homeland.
This ancient story mirrors our modern Christian experience. We too live as exiles in a culture that often opposes God's values. Like those ancient Israelites, we face a daily choice: Will we become so comfortable in our secular surroundings that we forget our true citizenship is in heaven?
The ease with which we adapt to our culture's values should concern us. When we blend in too well with the world around us, we may be losing our distinctive salt and light. Our effectiveness as witnesses diminishes when we prioritize fitting in over standing out for Christ.
Today’s Bible Verse
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."
- 1 Peter 2:9
Reflection Question
In what areas of your life have you become too comfortable with the values of our culture, and how might God be calling you to live more distinctively as His representative?
Sermon Quote
Do you understand that we have lost home field advantage and every game that we play from this day forward is played on a foreign field.
Prayer
Lord, help me recognize where I've become too comfortable with this world's values. Give me courage to live as Your representative, even when it means standing apart from the crowd. Remind me daily that my true citizenship is in heaven. Amen.
